The Apapa Customs Area Controller,  Comptroller Auwal Mohammed is making frantic effort to give Apapa Customs Command a new lease of life.

The Apapa Area One Customs Command which is a flagship of Nigeria Customs Service, had in the first quarter of the year 2023, taken giant strides in improving on all its statutory functions. For example, between January and March 2023, it has broken new grounds in the area of revenue generation, anti-smuggling activities, stakeholder’s engagement and interaction, manpower training and development.

Since he assumed duty in January 2023, Comptroller Auwal Mohammed, has been taking steps aimed at ensuring  that the tempo of compliance is sustained and improved upon.

Comptroller Auwal Mohammed is a seasoned Customs Officer who has reputation for high standards of discipline.

Hard work and dedication has been identified as some essential qualities that Comptroller Auwal Mohammed have possessed to take the service to the next level.

Even a blind man perceives the positive impact of suppressing smuggling activities, increase in revenue generation and trade facilitation.

His integrity and patriotism is not questionable. Having followed his activities since  he took over the mantle of leadership as the Customs Area Controller of Apapa Customs Area Command, he has established and sustained a peaceful and harmonious working environment which has seen importers, freight forwarders, and clearing agents carry out their business without delay or rancour.

His act of humility, receptiveness, open door policy and administrative acumen has been effectively deployed to make his office business friendly.

For example, the command during the period under review recorded a total collection of N212,592, 680, 700.99, as revenue.

This achievement is mainly due to the commitment of the management team in the command headed by Comptroller Auwal Mohammed.

His successes and achievements is testimony to his excellent leadership quality and his zeal to continue to contribute and always adopt a proactive approach to the fast evolving changes of the port environment to help him achieve efficient service delivery, and to engender trade facilitation.

In a statement reported in export trade, the command exported goods worth N70, 200, 829, 358.67, which is equivalent to Free On Board FOB value of $159, 845, 232 .84. He is working towards making the export unit more robust, in addition to enforcing regulations concerning the illegal trade on endangered plants and animals species.

Our study of Comptroller Auwal Mohammed, the dogged fighter against smuggling activities convinces us that he has made significant impact in the area of anti-smuggling activities which has resulted in the seizure of various prohibited items with a Duty Paid Value of N22, 099, 618, 111 .00

The point  has to be made that apart from this facts and figures, the  Command    uncovered a large quantity of 225mg  of tramadol tablets from India,  valued at N21, 600,000, 000 .00.

Given its achievements thus far, he is optimistic of meeting the revenue target for the year.

He continues to fathom new ways to engage stakeholders in a bid to improve on the service delivery, but in doing this, he does not hesitate to bring to book those whose intention are fraudulent, and who persist in trying to evade the payment of all proper duties.

He recognizes and appreciate the robust synergy and collaboration of critical stakeholders and security agencies.

The report has shown that the command has over the period sustained and nurtured inter-agency relationship which information sharing and intelligence is a predominant factor.
