Customs Intercepts 1,500 Pieces of Bullet Proof Jackets, Drugs, Others Worth N3.6bn in One Month
The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), zone ‘A’ of Nigeria Customs Service, recently announced seizures of bullet proofs, drugs and other items worth N3.6bn in the month of June alone.
The Customs Area Controller of the Unit, Comptroller IK Oladeji, who disclosed this at a press briefing in his office, also said that, smugglers made every effort to cover their crime by creating bunkers in their vehicles to ensure that the items were not discovered.
Besides, Comptroller Oladeji, said the operatives of the Service adopted uncompromising actions to discover the concealed items around South Western part of the country.
The breakdown of the seized items included 1,500 pieces of bullet proof jackets, 989 kg of Indian Hemp (Cannabis Sativa) and 5,229 cartons of expired drugs.
Further breakdown of the items seized included 343,750 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) 7,150 bags of foreign parboiled rice at 50 kg each, 32 units of used motor vehicles, 120 bags of sugar at 50 kg each, 3,560 cartons of poultry products were intercepted.
Aside from disclosing that four suspects were arrested in connection with various seizures for violating import/export guidelines, concealment, wrong classification, smuggling, and contravening policy directives, Comptroller
Oladeji, also told newsmen that security and medical experts is reported to have said that people who take illicit drugs are liable to have mental health cases, and are more often motivated for wrong reasons; while extreme motivations could lead to loss of conscience that aids the commission of crimes.
In the area of revenue generation, he said the Unit, also recovered the sum of N62, 017,875.82) in revenue through issuance of Demand Notices on consignments whose importers failed to pay correct duties.
