NIMASA To Establish Shipping Registration Unit At Blue Economy Ministry To Curb Foreign Incursion
NIMASA is set to establish a shipping business and registration unit at the federal ministry of marine and blue economy in order to address foreign incursion into indigenous shipping agents business.
Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola stated this at the stakeholders engagement meeting organised recently by the ministry in Lagos.
Dr Mobereola states that the agency has noted with concern, the foreign incursion into certain aspects of ports and shipping business which is supposed to be exclusive for Nigerian indigenes.
He recalled that stakeholders in the sector have over the years cried out over indiginisation of certain jobs in the shipping sector, including the shipping and freight forwarding sector.
Commenting on the issue, the NIMASA Director-General is quoted as saying that: “We need to establish a mandatory registration and licensing portal for Nigerian shipping agents, to be the only ones with the rights to operate in Nigerian shipping industry”.
In his words: “This would eliminate the foreign incursions that we have observed. We also noticed that these foreigners are registering companies with the assistance of Nigerians, so the purpose here is to eliminate such acts, and help us develop the Nigerian shipping, and most importantly the shipping agents sector to make it more economically friendly and create jobs for Nigerians”.
Additionally, he said this department would be created soon upon the approval of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.
