The Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT) Sector 2, South West Zone, Lagos has achieved tremendous success through interceptions of prohibited items across the sector with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N1, 381,030,400 and Auction Value (AV) of N31, 382,000 for violating various sections of the Nigeria Customs Service Acts, the Federal Government import and export guidelines and the Nigeria Immigration laws.
The Co-ordinator, Joint Border Patrol Team Sector 2, South West Zone Lagos, Deputy Comptroller Mohammed Salisu Shuaibu, disclosed this during a press briefing on the activities of the sector for the period between July to August, 2024, being the third quarter of the year
He recalled that the Federal Government in 2019 constituted the joint operations with the view to curbing smuggling activities and other cross border crimes that threaten national and economic security.
According to him, the prohibited items seized within the period under review were deposited into the six government warehouses across the sector.
The breakdown of the seized items included 4,019 Jerricans of premium motor spirit of 30liters each, 2,633 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each, 868 jumbo bales of second hand clothing, 790 pieces of codeine syrup of 100ml each, 338 sacks of artificial razing, 154 blocks of various size of cannabis sativa, 135 sacks of used footwears, 77 sacks of ginger, 45 bags of calcium propionate E282 food addictive (20kg), 21 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 25kg each, 15 units of cars (fairly used detained)
Further breakdown of the intercepted items included 5 units of cars (means of conveyance), 5 units of cars ( fairly used released), 4 trucks, 3CTNS of matanti macaroni, 3 CTNS matanti spaghetti, 2 units of motorcycles, 1unit of tricycle with total Duty Paid Value DPV of N1,381,030, 400 including 2 suspects, 109 suspected immigrants (male), 47 suspected immigrants (female).
Deputy Comptroller Mohammed Salisu Shuaibu, said in collaboration with Nigeria Immigration Service, the Joint Border Patrol Team JBPT, has intercepted 125 person refused entry, 11 person refused departure, 18 trafficking in person and two suspected trafficking agents who violated Immigration laws and were immediately handed over to the Immigration Service for further investigation and prosecution where necessary.
Aside from this, he said the sector also recovered a total of N26, 131, 260 revenue through the issuance of Debit Note (DN) on vehicles and other goods which were underpaid.
Deputy Comptroller Mohammed Salisu Shuaibu, who said JBPT Sector 2 is not relenting in its efforts to combating smuggling activities and illegal migrants that are undermining our national security, also announced that while the federal government is committed to ensuring the availability of premium motor spirit (pms) to the citizenry, it is disheartening to know that some notorious smugglers are bent on smuggling the products to neighbouring countries for their selfish interest.
Deputy Comptroller Mohammed Salisu Shuaibu is quoted as saying that, “These groups of unpatriotic citizens will have us to contend with, as the sector has deployed intelligence to apprehend offenders”.
He disclosed that the sector is fully committed to face the challenge ahead as the sector are in the last quarter of the year 2024.
In his words: “We are enhancing our collaboration and the use of intelligence to contend with the possibility of more desperation from the smugglers. We are taking more proactive measures by confronting them with increased vigor in line with the Comptroller-General of Custom’s marching order, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, DSM, Fnipr, psc(+).
He used the opportunity to warned smugglers to shun smuggling and avoid being lured into committing crimes with the aim to making easy wealth.
He called on all stakeholders such as traditional rulers, religious bodies and youth leaders to sensitize their subjects against smuggling activities which destroy the nation’s economy, undermined the nation security and transfer employment to other nations.
At the end of the press briefing, he expressed his profound gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and his management team for making these achievements possible by supporting JBPT with the needed logistics.
