Tin Can Island Port Area Command Intercepts Illicit Dangerous Drugs

In line with the CGC’s policy thrust of innovation, collaboration and consolidation, intelligence officers of Tin Can Island Port Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service, in conjunction with the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted 684 parcels of cannabis indica weighing 341.025kg, smuggled into the country with a street value of N682, 050, 000. 00
The Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Island Port Area Command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, announced this during the handing over ceremony of the illicit dangerous drugs to National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in furtherance of existing interagency collaboration and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NDLEA and Nigeria Customs Service, in Apapa, Lagos.
In his words: “In the coming weeks, it is our hope and desire to hand over several other containers of similar na in the coming weeks, it is our hope and desire to hand over several other containers of similar nature after consultations with Customs Headquarters”.
The breakdown of each container seized included container number msmu 518030/2, which during a joint 100 percent physical examination conducted on 2 August 2024, 75 packets of cannabis indica weighing 37.5kg was revealed.
He noted that at the time of processing the intelligence, system profiling indicated that a declaration was made on an SGD number which was withheld on 30th July 2024, listing three used vehicles.
Further breakdown of container seized included container number msmu 602957/0 1X40ft, which during a joint 100 percent physical examination conducted on 8 Aug 2024, 532 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 265.025kg was discovered. He disclosed that as of the time of processing the intelligence, no declaration had been entered.
The Customs Area Controller, said the shipping company in connection with the consignment is Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), with container number FSCU 927461/3 (1X40FT), which after a joint 100 percent physical examination conducted on 8 Aug 2024, 75 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 37.5kg was discovered.
He announced that investigation by the Command and NDLEA is ongoing, as the NDLEA will update the public on the interdiction, arrest and prosecution.
In furtherance of the synergy between the NDLEA and the NCS, he said the command has handed over the contents of the three containers totaling 684 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 341.025kg with a street value of N682, 050,000.00.
According to him, the command and indeed the Service will deploy all necessary resources and strategies at their disposal and in collaboration with security and other regulatory agencies check the menace of illegal importation of illicit and dangerous substances.
At the end of handing over ceremony, he said: “We are more than committed to deliver on this mandate. I wish to thank you for partnering with the NCS to ensure and sustain the protection of the Nigerian society”.
