The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Joe Anani has handed over the seized arms and ammunition to the National Centre for the control of small arms and light weapons (NCCSALW).
He handed over the seized items to the South West Coordinator, National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), South West Zone and members of his entourage, in the presence of management members of Port and Terminal Multi-services Limited, sectional heads, heads of sister agencies, officers and men, and Journalists.
In his comment, Comptroller Joe Anani said the event underscores very important areas of their function, which included anti-smuggling, legitimate trade, revenue generation and collection and inter-agency collaboration.
He expressed the anti smuggling resolve at ensuring that prohibited items do not escape from their checks.
He also expressed commitment to ensure that only legitimate trade thrives within their borders. He further expressed the shared commitment to inter agency collaboration, and fostering cooperation.
He noted that the handing over took place following the approval of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR psc(+) under whose supervision these seizures were made.
The breakdown of these seizures included five (5) pistols of different make, one (1) crossman pump master rifle, one hundred and thirty two (132) numbers of Remington live cartridges, and 51numbers of 9mm Lugar live ammunition.
Further breakdown of the seized items included four (4) numbers of 9mm magazines, and 40 numbers of 9mm, NIM FC 30-30 blank and hollow ammunitions, 118 of 9mm empty shells
The report said these arms and ammunitions were uncovered in 25 different occasions by officers during examination of imported vehicles between 2022 to 2025.
Besides, these seizures are fallout of the collective due diligence of the command and other sister agencies in the port.
Still, Comptroller Joe Anani used the occasion to reiterate that PTML remains a “no go area” for unlawful trade under any guise.
In short, Comptroller Joe Anani, said the command has an unshaken commitment to implement the Revised Kyoto Convention, which is a World Customs Organisation (WCO) instrument for trade facilitation, while using available manpower and technology to exercise the required control for import and export trade.
He said under the NCS Modernisation Project, which began in PTML command, the Unified Customs Management System (UCMS) also known as B’Odogwu has raised the bar of the command’s productivity.
Meanwhile, he announced that PTML command will receive scanners soon as part of the modernisation project and their capacity to detect concealments, like these arms and ammunition would be greatly enhanced.
He however thanked their compliant stakeholders for their cooperation at all times, saying that they are part of the command’s success story. He urged them to keep it up.
Commenting on the revenue drive of the command, he said two (2) days to the end of the month, the command collected a total of ₦44,058,849,416.65, surpassing N40,497,594,223.89 collected in Jan, 2025, by
N3,561,255,192.76, representing 8.8% increase in revenue.
At the end of the event, and on behalf of the CGC, he formally handover the seizures to the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) for appropriate action.
