Their mission was to witness the handing over ceremony of Comptroller Shuaibu and taking over of Comptroller Godwin Otunla at Ogun 1 Area command, Idioroko.
Comptroller Godwin Otunla, in his speech, expressed his sincere appreciation to Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, and his management team for the confidence reposed in him to take up this crucial assignment.
Comptroller Godwin Otunla, who promised not to take this trust for granted, also gave the assurance that he will do his best, guided by the values of professionalism, integrity, national service.
He commended his predecessor, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, for his sterling leadership and commendable achievements during his tenure.
He disclosed that under Comptroller Shuaibu leadership, the command recorded significant operational breakthroughs, including increased revenue collection, enhanced anti- smuggling operations, and improved community engagement.
He commended Comptroller Shuaibu for his dedication, strategic foresight which have undoubtedly raised the command’s bar, and leave behind a legacy worthy of emulation.
Beside this, he also saluted his efforts and wished him success in his future endeavours.
He told officers, stakeholders, and the gentlemen of the press that he is fully aware of the unique operational environment of Ogun 1 Area command, with its vast borders, dynamic social economic activities, and ever evolving security landscape.
He went on to say that he is aware of the strategic importance of the command to the national economy and border security. As he assumed this role, he assured that his vision is to consolidate on gains already recorded and pursue continuous improvement in the areas of efficiency, enforcement, intelligence-led operations, stakeholders collaboration, and community relations.
He announced that the command shall remain unwavering in their commitment to actualizing the core mandate of the Service, including revenue generation, suppression of smuggling, facilitation of legitimate trade, and protection of national security.
Comptroller Godwin Otunla, however, urged officers and men of the command to remain committed, disciplined, and professional in the discharge of their duties.
He disclosed that their success as a team will depend largely on their unity of purpose, adherence to ethical conduct, and pursuit of excellence.
Meanwhile, he assured officers and men of the command of his readiness to sustain the culture of diligence and ensure that the command remains a model of efficiency and service delivery.
Furthermore, he assured traditional rulers, community leaders, host communities, and relevant stakeholders of their resolve to continue operating open door policy.
Moreover, he promised to build on the robust partnerships established by his predecessor and deepen their collaboration in ways that would foster mutual understanding, peace, and shared progress.
He used the opportunity to sound a clear note of caution to economic saboteurs and smugglers, who may wish to test their resolve, that the new administration under his leadership will not tolerate any form of economic sabotage.
In the light of the above, he promised to deploy all lawful means to combat smuggling and enforce compliance with extant laws and regulations.
Comptroller is quoted as saying: “Our approach will be firm, fair, and intelligence driven”.
At the end of the handing over and taking over ceremony, Comptroller Godwin Otunla, sought for continued support, cooperation, and prayers of everyone, as the journey ahead may be challenging.
He said, he is confident that together they can build on the solid foundation that has been laid, and take Ogun 1 Area command to the greater heights.
